Social Impact

MNB Ltd is a social for-profit company that transforms its profits for social and environmental impact.
It all started in 2015 in Rubavu when MNB ltd supported a small social project of the solidarity savings groups of the Mutualité IFEZA, to pay the annual contribution to the community health insurance Mutuelle de santé (Musa).
Coffee income is directly distributed to the reimbursement of various small credits contracted throughout the year, mainly for food, school fees, health, etc.
The coffee tree, which is the only wealth of the region, already occupies more than 50% of the small arable land. The remaining land, very degraded, does not even exceed about 5 acres per household.
MNB has found an innovative solution across the oyster mushroom value chain to generate food, regular year-round income for low-income coffee farmers as well as regenerate soils. The action recycles the huge amounts of waste generated by coffee washing industries, as well as other agricultural waste mainly from the cultivation of soybeans.
Socio-economic impact: healthy food, jobs, income, and dignity
- Increase food security and overcome malnutrition throughout the year by producing fresh and healthy vegetables, even in urban areas. There is a change in eating habits: cultivated mushrooms are available all year round instead of wild mushrooms that are only available twice a year in the rainy season.
- Create jobs/self -employed with sustainable income for unemployed and landless women and young people.
- Empowerment of women and young people.
Environmental impact: healthy soil and healthy planet
As an alternative to the removal of agricultural waste without extra transport, the project:
- Contributing to the reduction of tons of methane generated by agriculture.
- Introduce soil health with organic compost and indoor cultivation that uses little arable land.
- Improve biodiversity by growing a resilient variety of vegetables, fruit and coffee trees.
- Making the public aware of the adjustment and mitigation of climate change.
