Proud to contribute to a circular food system in Rwanda!

At Moulins du Nil Blanc, we are dedicated to sustainability and innovation across the value chain. We are thrilled to share that our work is featured in a new video highlighting the “Impact – Circular Food Systems for Rwanda” initiative by the WRI Africa Food Program.

CIRF stands for the Circular Innovation Opportunity Fund / Circular Innovation Facility, commonly associated with the broader Circular Food Systems for Rwanda program (led by the World Resources Institute (WRI) in partnership with organizations like the African Circular Economy Network (ACEN) and supported by the IKEA Foundation).

We are part of this initiative because at Moulins du Nil Blanc, we pioneer a zero-waste mushroom value chain in Rwanda.

Our work aligns directly with the goals of the Circular Food Systems initiative:

  • Converting Agricultural Waste into Value: Every year, we collect and process over 70 tonnes of discarded coffee pulp and organic residues in the Rubavu District—turning what would otherwise pollute the environment into nutrient-rich substrate for cultivating fresh oyster mushrooms.

  • Closing the Nutrient Loop: The circle doesn’t end at harvest. We recycle 100% of our spent mushroom substrate by converting it into organic compost, returning valuable nutrients to local farmers to enrich their soil naturally.

  • Empowering Local Communities: Through our Farmer Field Schools, we train low-income farmers, supply high-quality mushroom tubes, and provide local farming communities with reliable, year-round income streams.

Being selected and featured by WRI validates our vision: showing how local, zero-waste agribusinesses can lead the transition toward a sustainable, climate-resilient circular economy in Rwanda and across Africa.
